Japanese Earthquake Triggers Tsunami in the Pacific; no damage in Alaska

Following an 8.9 magnitude earthquake in Japan on the morning of March 11, a tsunami advisory was issued for coastal areas of Alaska and Hawaii as well as other regions of the Pacific including California, Oregon and Washington.

Mariners: where do you get your weather?

If you captain a vessel, please take this short online survey.

AOOS and the Marine Exchange of Alaska are developing a program to stream weather and seas information through the AIS (Automatic Identification System) used by many vessels.

To ensure the program meets users’ needs, AOOS is surveying the boating community on how to improve the dissemination of weather information to Alaska mariners. The survey should take less than 10 minutes to complete. We would appreciate your input.
