Grants & Proposals

AOOS receives its core funding from five-year NOAA cooperative agreements with the national Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) Program. Funds are used to complete the projects and priorities approved by the AOOS Board in consultation with our stakeholders through a variety of engagement mechanisms.

We are currently working under NOAA cooperative agreement #NA11NOS0120020 awarded in 2011 through May 31, 2016 and then extended through May 31, 2017. The original request was for $20 million at $4 million a year.

FY2011-2015 Original Proposal

Once the IOOS Program receives its annual funding from Congress, AOOS is notified of the amount we will actually receive for the year. This usually occurs in February or March. If it is less than the $4 million originally requested (and it always is!), we submit an annual proposal de-scoped to the amount actually received. We submit semi-annual reports for each fiscal year of the cooperative agreement.

AOOS submitted a new five-year proposal for a cooperative agreement with NOAA’s IOOS Program for FY 2016-20 which was awarded under NOAA cooperative agreement #NA16NOS0120027 and started June 1, 2016 to go through May 31, 2021. the original request was for $20 million at $4 million a year.

During FY16 AOOS will be working under both #NA11NOS0120020 (extended for one-year) and #NA16NOS0120027 concurrently.

AOOS also leverages its core funding by acquiring additional funding through grants from local, state, federal and foundation sources. These funds are used to supplement the core funded projects and take advantage of opportunities that arise between federal funding cycles.
